Dear SAGE Friends,
We are pleased to announce that Santa Monica High School was crowned the SAGE USA champion team on Saturday, May 29, in Buffalo/Niagara Falls. First-runner up honors were earned by Holy Angels Academy of Buffalo. Third place went to Benicia High School of California and fourth place went to Northwestern Lehigh of PA.
Special thanks are extended to Pete and Betsy Eimer of Buffalo for organizing the event (in conjunction with D'Youville College and its SIFE leaders), and for taking us on the incredible tour of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The Maid of the Mist boat ride was a "Bucket List" moment for several of us! Also, thank you to the Chico State SAGE mentors/leaders for working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth flow of events.
This was by far the most competitive tournament ever. At least three or four other teams could have been presenting in the top four.
Congratulations go to the following other SAGE participants:- Mercer High School (Seattle): SAGE USA Honorable Mention and Best Technology Award
- Ross High School (Cincinnati): SAGE USA Honorable Mention and Innovation Award
- Kelly High School (Chicago): Rookie of the Year and Spirit Awards
- Phillips High School (Chicago): Rookie of the Year and Spirit Awards
- City Charter (Pittsburgh): Rookie of the Year and Spirit Awards
- Upward Bound (Buffalo): Rookie of the Year and Spirit Awards
- Hughes High School (Cincinnati): Spirit Award
Santa Monica and Holy Angels will now move on to represent SAGE USA at the Eighth Annual SAGE World Cup, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 23-27, 2010.
SAGE's home office has provided each team with a $500 award to help them begin fundraising for their trip to Cape Town. If you are in a position to assist these teams as they get ready for the SAGE World Cup (e.g., by contributing your time, talent or treasure), please let me know and I will connect you with Teri Jones/Anita Kemp of Santa Monica and/or Brian Carrier of Holy Angels.
Once again, congratulations to all students and their teachers. Your work is making a tremendous difference in your communities.
All my best,
Curt DeBerg
